Southwest DeKalb Matters

A Community Ready for Its Next Chapter

Southwest DeKalb stands at the crossroads of history and opportunity. This study represents more than research—it’s the foundation for a community-driven vision that celebrates what makes this area special while building new economic strength.

Our study focuses on three core areas:

  • Economic Opportunity: Creating pathways for small business expansion, workforce development, and entrepreneurial success that generate lasting jobs and investment in the community. We’re exploring how a creative and arts district could serve as a catalyst for place-driven economic growth, attracting private investment while building on the corridor’s authentic character.
  • Cultural Preservation: Honoring the unique history and character that define Southwest DeKalb while developing placemaking initiatives that draw visitors and celebrate local identity. By nurturing the area’s creative energy and artistic heritage, we can create a destination that reflects the authentic culture built by generations of residents and business owners.
  • Inclusive Growth: Ensuring that residents and existing businesses benefit directly from new development, infrastructure improvements, and investment opportunities.

Community-Centered Development

How We’re Building This Vision Together

Like all of our initiatives at Decide DeKalb, we want to hear from you! Your voice shapes every recommendation. We’re engaging with local business owners, residents, stakeholders, artists, and creatives throughout the corridor to explore the potential of a creative district as an economic driver. Through community meetings, surveys, and stakeholder sessions, we’re gathering input from those who know Southwest DeKalb best—because thoughtful planning starts with listening to the people who have built the culture and assets that make this place special.

Investing Strategically: We’re identifying catalytic projects and policy interventions that will generate equitable outcomes and meaningful economic impact for the corridor. Our goal is to ignite placemaking and spur job creation while implementing strategies that prevent the displacement of legacy residents and businesses who have created this authentic, dynamic place.

Building for the Future: Our goal is positioning Southwest DeKalb as a regional destination for creativity, commerce, and culture—a place where businesses choose to grow and families choose to stay.

Southwest DeKalb’s Rich History

Southwest DeKalb has long been the heart of DeKalb County’s African American community, home to generations of families who built businesses, raised children, and created lasting institutions. With the historic churches, family-owned restaurants, community centers, and local enterprises, this corridor tells the story of resilience and entrepreneurship.

Today, Southwest DeKalb is experiencing renewed energy. Young professionals are discovering its affordable housing and convenient location. Creative entrepreneurs are opening new businesses alongside established community anchors. Infrastructure investments are improving transportation and connectivity. We want to help build for an even better tomorrow.

Current Strengths:

  • Strategic location with growing transportation access
  • Strong community institutions and established neighborhood networks
  • Diverse mix of residential, commercial, and community spaces
  • Rich cultural heritage and authentic character
  • Growing interest from new residents and businesses

This study will help us build on these assets while addressing challenges and creating new opportunities for shared prosperity.
