Beyond Physical Therapy Offers One-Stop-Shop for Healing Pain, Improving Mobility and Getting Fit

Seated beneath a leafy potted plant in an airy, freshly remodeled house-turned-office in south Decatur, Victoria Anglin smiles and takes a moment before recounting the path that led her to launch Beyond Physical Therapy, her new therapy practice.

“I’ve been a physical therapist for more than 25 years,” said Anglin, relaxed and welcoming as she tours people around her new facility on Glenwood Road which just opened in December.

She wanted to open a place that would heal pain, improve mobility and help people get in shape – all in on a one-stop shop for an underserved community.

“There’s a real shortage of physical therapists in Georgia in general, and very few on the south side of Memorial Drive in DeKalb,” she said. “I really want to help boost an underserved area,” she said.

Anglin said the idea to open Beyond Physical Therapy was sparked by an offer from a fellow PT professional who was interested in selling her practice and retiring. “My husband and I thought about it and started trying to buy her business, then we decided the thing to do was to just go out on our own,” she said.

The couple also dabbles in real estate (they own a couple of rental properties), and when the tidy ranch house on Glendale Avenue – which was already in a commercially zoned area – became available, they decided to take the leap.

While many of the treatments and therapies Beyond Physical Therapy may be found elsewhere, Anglin said her focus on one-on-one, individually designed therapy sets her services apart.

“I have every confidence that once Beyond Physical Therapy’s name gets out and word spreads that we’re an individual-focused practice and not just another corporate patient mill, we’ll see our business grow,” she said with a bright smile. “Our hope is to hire two or three more therapists here and add a new location every year. Like our name says, I’m a person who goes beyond in everything I do.”

From sports injuries to the elderly

Anglin was trained in physical therapy at Gwinnett Technical College, and got her Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences from North American University. She’s worked all over DeKalb County from Emory Healthcare to senior living providers Wesley Woods and A.G. Rhodes.

Her background includes extensive experience in treating sports-related injuries and helping elderly patients who’ve undergone knee or hip replacements. She offers specialized treatment regimens for patients – often elderly – who have difficulty with balance and mobility issues. Other specialties include treating victims of stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons’ Disease and breast cancer recovery and scar pain, among others.

“I’ve really pretty much done it all over the years, and worked with all sorts of diagnoses,” said Anglin. “Mostly pain treatment, of course – a lot of back, knee, shoulder, knee replacements, hip replacements – and a lot of sports medicine.”

Certified to accept Medicare and TriCare

Beyond Physical Therapy is certified to accept patients covered by Medicare and TriCare, for military personnel, and is part of Aetna Insurance’s network of healthcare providers. Georgia is a “direct access” state, which means someone can be evaluated and treated by a physical therapist without needing a doctor or other healthcare provider’s referral.

Career Mom

While pursuing her own career, Anglin also raised two children and is now a grandmother. She credits her husband, an IT specialist and entrepreneur, with encouraging her to launch Beyond Physical Therapy.

“My whole career has been built around my family and my community,” she says. “My kids were never sent to after-school care, and I was always involved in what they did. I coached basketball and my daughter’s track team and worked on aquatics programs. At one time I was the president of one of the largest African-American swim teams in Gwinnett County. Unfortunately, it’s not around anymore. My motto’s always been ‘Healthy life, healthy kids.”

Investing in DeKalb

Anglin and her husband invested in the property that houses her practice. The house’s roof was raised by eight feet and the interior extensively remodeled. A waiting area and desk adjoins a large open therapy room with dual padded tables, an array of weights and dumbbells, exercise balls and specialized equipment for TRX Suspension Training, an advanced weight and resistance workout regimen

The rear section of the house offers a private treatment space as well, along with a kitchen and storage space.
