Metro
Atlanta, the nation's tenth largest metro area, ranks
sixth nationally for students enrolled full-time in
area college and universities and for total degrees
conferred, according to the Atlanta Regional Consortium
for Higher Education (ARCHE). Near the top for degrees
conferred in many subjects, metro Atlanta ranks second
for degrees conferred in engineering and related technologies
and fourth in computer and information sciences. As
found in a recent ARCHE study, in an average year more
than 130,000 students enrolled full time in the region's
institutes of higher learning.
DeKalb County is home to many of the fine colleges
and universities that serve metro Atlanta, including
Agnes Scott, Emory, Oglethorpe, Columbia Theological
Seminary, Mercer, Georgia Perimeter College, DeKalb
Tech, National-Louis and DeVry Atlanta. An estimated
20,000 students are enrolled annually in degreed programs
in these DeKalb schools, with another 44,000 pursuing
certificates and upgrading their technical and business
skills.
